Does Artificial Intelligence scare you?

In recent years there was an explosion of artificial intelligence in many forms and use cases and there seems to be no end to new ideas of how to use AI to make our lives easier, both professionally as well as personally. Many people however start to feel threatened by AI, feeling that machines will take over the world.

Let's dive into the subject by pointing out that "intelligence" is simply "the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills" and is hence not limited to humans only. It also doesn't mean that intelligence by itself leads to better decision making or behavior.

artificial intelligence

When looking at the definition of "artificial" it is "man made" or "not natural" as opposed to natural. This means that artificial intelligence is not the result of evolution but the result of human effort and design. It's made by humans using machines.

Then why are we scared of Artificial Intelligence?

There are a few reasons. The first reason is that we don't understand how artificial intelligence works and what its limitations are. We don't know how it will change the world or what kind of risks it poses. We also don't know what kinds of decisions artificial intelligence will make or how ethically questionable they might be.

Another reason is that we're not sure how to create artificial intelligence that is ethical and responsible. We don't know how to make it humane or intelligent without compromising its ability to learn quickly and carry out complex tasks.

The last reason is that we're not sure what kind of AI will become dominant in the future. There are many different types of artificial intelligence, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. It's hard to predict which one will become the most powerful, or whether there will be multiple types of AI that coexist.

So what is the human role in artificial intelligence?

The human role in artificial intelligence is to create and maintain the AI system. This involves designing the AI system, programming it, and supervising its operation. It's also important to make sure that the AI system is ethical and responsible, and that it doesn't harm people or the environment.

That means that human role is to define and control the environment in which AI exists and thus define its limits.

All of us will have to learn what AI can and cannot do, how to limit its use and make sure to bring the results back into a human ethical system. Already today we all use AI without even knowing it.

Some examples of everyday use of AI include:

- Facial recognition software, which helps us identify people in photos or videos

- Natural language processing tools, which enable computers to understand human speech

They don't seem scary as long as we use them for a specific purpose that remains within ethical boundaries. Let's not forget that humans are at the beginning and the end of AI cycles, so maybe the only ones we should be scared of is humans.
